There is actually no such thing as ‘time management’. You can’t get time back! It’s all about making the best use of the time we all have and managing your days events and activities.
You planned to work on a marketing piece for one hour today but that didn’t happen. Neither did organising your office. Forget about that special dinner you planned – take-away here we come! Making those Calls to your leads and contacts didn’t happen either, maybe tomorrow……
Tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes, then the next day and the next. You are still shuffling major tasks until another day. You are not getting anywhere – you’re overwhelmed and give in. Besides, it’s such a great excuse, “I can’t today because I’m so busy.”
Sound familiar?
Question Yourself:
Do you want to get out of this rut? Do you want to be more productive? Do you want to achieve your dreams and goals? Then you must have a plan. You must hold yourself accountable for your daily actions. Do you try to do too much yourself.
Get out your calendar, diary, or PDA and make an appointment with yourself. Every day reserve the day and time you will create, make phone calls, and do whatever else is important to your success. Also, reserve time for the kids and special people in your life, and exercise. You may think that it is strange to do this, yet you must put time on your calendar for the activities that are important to you. Include productive activities and personal time. Hold yourself accountable for your schedule.
Time management approaches are not a one size fits all. Find your style and then modify it to fit your needs. Which system works for you to recall key information, visual, audio, or kinaesthetic? Some people need to write information down (A4 paper diary) while others can hear it once (alarm on their phone). Others like to use their hands, like inputting data in a computer or palm pilot. Knowing how you remind yourself best is key to which time management strategy to use. One thing to remember is to stick with one system only. Too many systems can put you exactly where you started – chasing your daily tasks.
You can learn how to stop procrastinating and achieve success in all you do if you learn the appropriate time management and organisational skills.
