How often have you set goals and found that you don’t achieve them. How frustrating is that? Did you know that frustration is caused by not being able to see or identify your enemy (or saboteur)? So this week I thought I’d share a useful tip to enable you to take control of this…
A friend and fellow Coach, Steve Leach shared with us last week, his split personality… an identity he calls “Stupid Steve”. Whilst “Smart Steve” is responsible for setting his goals and going about achieving them, occasionally “Stupid Steve” mucks things up a bit, or plays the devil and undermines or thwarts totally his good intentions. This happens perhaps by distracting him from the key tasks at hand and stealing his time, or lowering his level of acceptance of standards achieved.
By identifying these things as they occur, “Smart Steve” is able to overcome “Stupid Steve” and make better progress than he normally would have, effectively overcoming his enemy or saboteur. So no more frustration… as the saboteur now has an identity, that he can deal with and move forward.
So….”Smart You”… you too probably have a “Stupid You” sitting on your shoulder distracting you, reducing “Smart You’s” efforts, but now you know who it is to deal with, you can win. Is your “Stupid You” lowering your levels of acceptance for your outcomes?
Of course, we are talking here about taking ownership and making yourself responsible for your outcomes, but it’s so much easier if we can blame someone else…. so now you have someone you can pin things on to… and have fun calling these occasions and taking control.
Make your week count – and keep “Stupid You” at bay!
Clive
