Coach, Skipper & Facilitator
A Unique Combination & A Catalyst For Change
I come from a family of small business owners, manufacturers, engineers and service professionals. Since leaving school I have been in business management… theory and practical experience combined. My history shows a trail of troubleshooting and improving how things in businesses small, medium and large run.
A Well Qualified “Calming” Influence
As a Certified Business & Executive Coach for 12 years+ I have spent most of my time helping business owners and managers get control and ease their anxieties, and implement systems to their businesses, with the aim of personal and business growth, increasing profits, gaining control and giving them the freedom to choose when they work. I became one of the only Professionally Accredited Business Coaches in Newcastle with the International Coaching Federation.
Starting life with British Leyland, I completed a unique 4 year Business Management Apprenticeship in the British Motor Industry covering all areas of a major business and included the Higher National Award in Business. Specialising in production, pre-production and materials management, I was recruited into the Land-Rover exporting division for a further 3 years.
My father during this time had been building a busy small engineering business which was needing some structure so I took some redundancy from the struggling Leyland Group and took up a role in Operations Management with MRM Engineering (now Cotswold Tool & Press) in the Cotswold town of Witney implementing comprehensive systems across accounting, quality control, inventory management, purchasing and sales as 2IC in the business, working closely with the Production manager.
Sailing Coach and Avid Sailor…
With Sailing in my blood from school age I trained and took part in the 1985 Fastnet Yacht Racing classic finishing as one of only 71 of the 222 starters, with our team being determined not to give up.
I then discovered Australia as a backpacker paying my way by using my RYA Yachtmaster Instructor experience to train many students in sailing and yacht racing and in corporate team building exercises with EastSail in Sydney. Shortly after I then decided to leave the family business, emigrating in 1988 and walked straight into a role with EastSail, marketing and running corporate team training and sailing courses.
I completed the 1990 Hobart race along with many other Coastal races and of course still sail today and enjoy the competitive side of offshore racing, round the bouys in the lake…as well as cruising and yacht deliveries… in fact any chance to get on a decent yacht.
I’ve also enjoyed many years Coaching both my daughters team and my own Over 35s Football teams to enjoy great team environments and successes at differing levels…most recently being voted Coach of the Year as Coach of my All Age Womens Team
Working for an international electrical engineering business making high tech control equipment, I grew an inventory management role into systemising the whole of production management building efficiencies into place with my team, while my boss was moved sideways into a specialist role. Driven by the goal to have the days workload completed in time to go twilight racing I achieved this on a regular basis. Another example of employing logic to make things work well was when engaged by Merisel, a distribution company with major stock control issues. Using a simple systematic approach to identifying errors, mainly procedural, and putting systems or procedures in place, from Sales, through to Accounts, Purchasing, Goods in, Despatch, Returns, Management… a $multi-million computer hardware and software with only 48% accuracy in the computer … a disaster waiting to happen…I lifted the accuracy to 99.8%.
I have run my own businesses since 1993. Initially I established with my wife an outsourced bookkeeping and office management service where I mostly helped small business owners establish better processes in their accounting, training many either one on one or in groups. This business led to one of my clients asking me to help establish his business as a franchise in which we also took the first franchise as a good opportunity to move north out of Sydney. We built this business to be the most successful one in the Newcastle and Central Coast region until the franchisor sold out to a major international so we grabbed the opportunity to cash in and develop a new venture.
A further 5 years was then spent consulting to corporates in Cost Management and reduction exercises with many successes with $Millions saved. Clients here included names like Johnson and Johnson Medical, NJ Phillips, Weir Engineering, Johnson Screens and Stelform. During this period he also contracted with DecisionMax, helping them train their clients in the use of their Tender Management and Evaluation tools. I still work with them as their business tools have now developed into a fully functioning Supply Chain Management portal…see www.supplytorque.biz
Bringing it all together
One of my favourite words is “Leverage”, and I’m constantly analysing how we can use the power of leverage through systems and processes. Just like pulling a rope through a set of pulley blocks to decrease the amount of exertion you need to apply, I like the way that sailing a yacht helps to explore the way people work with systems and processes. I have seen so many times that once you’ve established them properly, trained the team properly on how they work, your work is done, and you can rely on others performing their roles for you well… consistently over and over again.
Over this time I have also formed strong connections with quality individuals and businesses to extend my abilities and resources to leverage my own abilities and who are able to support business owners and team leaders achieve their goals.
